Brief Description
The module will support students with little or no experience of post-compulsory education to develop the skills required to study in higher education.

Aim
The aim of this Module is to support students' development of key skills in literacy, numeracy, collaborative working, thinking skills, employability and enterprise, and IT.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Communicate effectively in writing, using formal academic conventions where appropriate.
2. Use numbers confidently to solve problems and to understand the results.
3. Study effectively both independently and with others.
4. Understand, apply analyse and evaluate information gathered through research.

Indicative Content

1. About studying in higher education
Distinctive features of HE study, familiarisation with Abertay, thinking ahead to next steps.
2. Effective Communication
Formal academic writing, effective presentations, taking notes, relevant IT tools.
3. Handling data
Building confidence in working with figures, gathering quantitative data, basic data analysis, relevant IT tools.
4. Developing ideas through research and critical thinking.
Formal academic approaches to research, using the library, online research, developing arguments based on evidence versus assertions, analysing opposing points of view, relevant IT tools.
5. Studying effectively independently and with other people
Independent study, making the most of different types of classes, the challenges of groupwork, relevant IT tools.

Students will be prepared for higher education (level 7) study by giving the opportunity to experience a range of teaching approaches, including lectures, seminars, tutorials and practicals. Brief Description
Just under half of the UK population now own a Smartphone or tablet, with UK app download revenue reaching over £280 million. Google’s App Inventor system has democratised smartphone application development by enabling non- programmers to create applications for the Android platform. This module will use the App Inventor system to teach basic programming and mobile operating system concepts while creating fully functional, useful and fun mobile applications.

The aim of this Module is to provide the student with :a basic understanding of programming concepts and problem solving through simple application development.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Demonstrate an ability to understand basic programming concepts.
2. Demonstrate an ability to understand the difference between developing for mobile & desktop operating systems.
3. Demonstrate an ability to solve simple problems through software design.

Indicative Content

1. Programming Fundamentals
An introduction covering the basic principles of programming and software design. Will include coverage of the terminology and implementation of fundamental programming components such as events, functions and variables.
2. The Mobile Platform
Understanding the specific limitations of programming for mobile devices and how this is different than programming for desktop platforms.
3. The App Inventor Development Environment
Explore the possibilities available through the App Inventor interface and understand how the development environment can be used to create mobile applications.
4. Developing Simple Android Applications
Following examples develop applications using the App Inventor environment which can solve simple problems or fulfil a specific user requirement.

Biological hierarchy e.g. System, organ, tissue, cell, common anatomical terms; relative positions of body parts, planes and sections; and general body regions.

Cardiovascular, respiratory , nervous, immune, endocrine, digestive, urinary, reproductive, integumentary, musulo-skeletal.
3. Cells and tissues
Structure and function of cells and tissues
4. Relationship between biology and health
Definitions of health. Biology as a determinant of health. Relationship between social, economic and psychological factors and health
5. Simple biological measurements
Measurement and documentation of radial pulse, respiratory rate, PEFR, temperature. Comparison against norms values.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Knowledge and understanding in this module will be developed by the use of lectures and supervised practical activity and will be supported by directed independent study. Supervised practical activities will take place in the clinical skills laboratory and will develop the student's skills in the measurement of temperature, pulse, respiration rate and PEFR. Practicals will also been run in the Human Performance Laboratory. These will be utilised to develop practical understanding of subject theory and introduce students to the applied nature of the subject area. In addition the use of lab practicals will develop an understanding of the terminology and techniques used in physiological measurement. Practical transferable skills will begin to be developed during these and will serve the basis of future development in the subject area. Both the exam and the lab report are designed to assess both understanding and knowledge of theory whilst the lab report will begin the process of developing the ability of students to both understand, organise and interpret basic data.

Aim
The aim of this Module is to provide the student with :A knowledge of the necessary Mathematical and Chemical principles needed to provide a solid foundation to allow entry into future degree level courses in the Biological, Forensic and Food Sciences and Civil Engineering.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to :
1. Distinguish simple classifications of chemical compounds (both organic and inorganic) and relate their structures to their molecular properties.
2. Appreciate the factors that determine how chemicals interact including acid-base and redox reaction concepts.
3. Understand the quantitative and qualitative aspects of chemical reactions and enthalpy changes involved.
4. Master basic numeracy skills associated with the types of standard calculations likely to be encountered in science and engineering degrees.
5. Understand why mathematical formulae are important in the interrogation of graphed data and be able to apply these where appropriate.
6. Use various mathematical functions including: Linear, Quadratic and Trignometric types for suitable applications.

Atomic structure, electron energy levels and orbital shape, The basis of the periodic table. Atomic parameters and their trends. Compounds, types of bonding, intermolecular forces and their roles. Polar and non polar molecules. Importance of hydrogen bonding.
2. QUANTITATIVE CHEMISTRY AND MEASUREMENT
Numbers and Units. SI system. Scientific notation. Moles and molar concentrations. Mass-moles and moles- mass calculations. Percentage compositions. Calculating empirical formulae. balanced equations.
3. CHEMICAL REACTION CLASSIFICATION
Fundamental concepts of precipitation, acid-base and redox reactions. Estimating pH of solutions. Introduction to weak acids and bases. Chemical Equilibria. Le Chateliers principle. Reaction rates. Effect of Temp and chemical concentrations on rates of chemical reactions. Enthalpy. Heat capacity and energy changes.
4. STRUCTURE AND REACTIVITY OF SIMPLE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
Structure, nomenclature and simple reactivity examples of alkanes, alkenes and functionalised hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acid derivatives. Introduction to aromatics.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
The Mathematics and Chemistry elements of the module will be delivered and assessed separately. Both however will be delivered by a series of lectures and supporting tutorials designed to provide underpinning knowledge of both chemistry and mathematics and support their application to a range of science and engineering disciplines. Assessment will be by coursework (Chemistry laboratory report) and separate examinations for both Chemistry and Mathematics. It is envisaged that students will work through a tutorial session away from class and that the start of the next session will involve a review of the material before a new topic is considered. Students may also be able to self- test using a Web CT on line formative assessment in each subject prior to the final formal class test assessments.

Additional Assessment Information
The knowledge and understanding of elements of Mathematics and Chemistry will be assessed by an end of module class test/exam in each subject. In addition however the students will be required to undertake web CT based formative assessments in each of the two subject areas as preparation for these final examinations. The web CT tests will be accessible from early in the module and students will be allowed as many opportunities to take these tests as they wish. In addition students will also be required to write up the one practical experiment. This is designed to help them to develop the necessary technical reporting skills which are fundamental in any science based degree course.

Statement on Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Psychology Component: in each session students will be introduced to a core area of Psychology. A lecture will provide a general overview of the topic under investigation. In each session a seminal study will be introduced and students will be expected to engage in a discussion of the study, its findings and their implications. The Psychology component will be assessed by a 1.5 hour examination. The exam paper will contain a question from each of the core areas of Psychology and students will be expected to answer 2 questions in the allocated time. The Sociology Component: Students will be introduced to a core sociological theme each week. The sociology classes will be a mixture of lecture, group work and class discussion and will be assessed by a 1250 word essay.
