Rifted is an educational online multiplayer game prototype for two players, set on a space station. After a test went wrong, the team were chewed up by time and spat out across the universe. Playing in the roles of two astronauts, working together the players must collaborate to fix the station. They will have to communicate and coordinate to succeed. Along the way they will face various challenges and obstacles that will test their knowledge in the core schooling subjects (i.e maths, science and language). The research behind Rifted aims to examine and explore how collaborative mechanics and behaviour can improve the learning experience of an educational game. It looks from different angles such as how different collaboration modals can be implemented to reinforce learning, how multiplayer can also make a game more fun, and how the enjoyability of a game affects the effectiveness of learning.
'Can online collaborative multiplayer improve the learning experience of educational games?' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by Morgan Finney, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.
I was inspired by the work of super massive games as well as my work in the Abertay professional project where I had to leave my comfort zone and design user interface for the first time, this project builds upon a previous module where we were tasked to design characters for a retelling of the wizard of oz with a twist and this project has been developing into a much larger personal project for me ever since.
