My vision for this project was to create a 3D environment for a video game, focusing on visual storytelling through the absence of characters. I created an abandoned British cottage, set 30 years after a post-apocalyptic event wipes out half of the world’s population. Paying close attention to the interior allowed me to expand the environmental storytelling and fill said environment with details about the people that once occupied the cottage. This cottage was once a family home, and over the years it has been a safe shelter for other remaining survivors, or may have even had some horrific acts take place inside it. The foliage has began to overtake the cottage, with mould growing inside and out to help convey that it has been abandoned for significant amount of time. I wanted to show years of damage, and how weather and other conditions have influenced the way it looks now. I explored both the horror caused by the apocalypse, and the beauty of a world being taken back by mother nature.
'Crafting a Compelling Story through an Environment' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by Daniel Tolland, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.
