This project will break down the elements that make up a first-person wave based shooter, and design them to be accessible for blind/visually impaired users via the use of audio. This means investigating the correct use of spatial audio within fps titles and aiming to design and gear our level to feature these correct uses. Furthermore, I will be reviewing existing methods of blind accessibility within shooter titles. These systems will then be broken down into what works and what doesn't, and then adapted to further fit within the context of our project. I will also be scanning online forums and reviews that discuss blind accessibility within released titles, and discovering what the needs and wants are for these users. Finally I will then be testing and iterating each audio system and SFX with "blind" users in order to further cater them towards the end user.
'The Blind God: Designing a Blind accessible system through the use of Audio' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by James Conroy, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.
I have always been curious on how I can help make games more available to people. As an Audio Designer, I found that I could help those who are visually impaired/blind enjoy games just by designing audio systems towards them. This project allowed me to help develop my audio skills whilst catering towards that demographic and gain a better understanding of what it means to be an Audio Designer.
