Achieving my first academic qualification at 60 has taught me that it’s never too late to embark on a new adventure and accomplish something meaningful.
Daryn Mason | Abertay University | MSc in Counselling

At the age of 60, Daryn has achieved something he never thought possible - earning his first academic qualification, an MSc in Counselling from Abertay.

Daryn’s educational path was anything but traditional. He left school without formal qualifications and dedicated decades to building a successful career as a freelance IT consultant. However, his desire for knowledge never faded.

His longstanding interest in psychology and therapy led him to Abertay, attracted by its unique focus on Pluralistic Counselling. The opportunity to learn from renowned professionals in the field played a pivotal role in his decision to return to education after so many years.

Abertay offered an opportunity to study under lecturers who are recognised experts in the field of counselling.

However, Daryn's transition into the academic world was not without its challenges. As a first-time student at the age of 60, he faced the daunting task of mastering essential academic skills, such as essay writing and referencing. He credits Abertay's study skills resources and support systems for helping him navigate this adjustment.

Despite these obstacles, Daryn thrived at Abertay, achieving a distinction in his MSc. The camaraderie he experienced with fellow students was a highlight, creating lifelong friendships that made his time at Abertay even more meaningful.

Daryn encourages future students to take a step-by-step approach:

Focus on one assignment at a time and utilise the resources available to you. If you ever find yourself in doubt, don’t hesitate to reach out to the SEZ team for support. Additionally, consider partnering with someone who has a different skill set—it can motivate you to excel and enhance your learning experience!

Now, as he looks to the future, Daryn is setting up his own private practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist. His new career path is a testament to his determination and passion for helping others. Reflecting on his remarkable achievement, he notes that his 60th birthday and graduation year coincide, making the accomplishment even more special.
