Tech multinational joins Scottish business and legal providers in supporting competition for video games start-ups

Abertay University’s video games design competition Dare Academy is to return this summer backed by tech multinational Dell, chartered accountants MHA Henderson Loggie and legal firm Lindsays.

With a reputation for producing some of Scotland’s most pioneering and commercially successful start-up studios, Dare returns after a break due to the pandemic, with a new online format and a prize fund worth £20,000.

Dare is open to students from Abertay’s School of Design and Informatics and reproduces an industry environment where student games studios conceptualise, design and build new prototype games through an intensive summer of hot-housing.

From a long list of initial entrants, a total of 6 teams have been selected to go forward to the final phase of this year’s competition and will each receive £1,000 up front to begin development.

In addition to helping fund the competition, Dell, Lindsays and MHA Henderson Loggie will offer mentorship, support and business advice to the student studios, with Dell also providing high-powered equipment through its Alienware gaming computer brand.

Previous Dare participants have included Bit Loom, whose winning game PHOGS! went on to become a hit across Xbox, PS4, Nintendo Switch and other platforms, as well as the award-winning AR/VR developer Pocket Sized Hands, who specialise in healthcare games, applied games solutions and have worked with organisations as diverse as the University of Cambridge, Poppyscotland and Northumbria Police.

The Dundee-based InGAME R&D centre is also backing the competition this year, offering organisational design and commercialisation support, priority access to InGAME facilities and testbeds, access to InGAME specialists and senior industry figures, and assistance to access future investment opportunities.

The winners of Dare Academy will be revealed in a live-streamed final to be held this September.
