Abertay cyberQuarter welcomes leading self-service banking technology provider to its growing network

NCR Atleos joins the Abertay cyberQuarter as an official partner

The leader in expanding self-service financial access for financial institutions, retailers and consumers has become the latest partner to join the Abertay cyberQuarter, Scotland’s hub for cybersecurity research and development.

NCR Atleos, which has maintained a site in Dundee since 1946 when it was part of NCR Corporation, has now become part of a growing network of organisations that have partnered with the Abertay cyberQuarter since its launch.

As part of the new partnership, NCR Atleos will benefit from secure office spaces within the cyberQuarter building on the Abertay campus, enabling the company to locate staff within the hub.

Additionally, the collaboration provides NCR Atleos with access to the academic expertise of staff within Abertay's Department of Cybersecurity and Computing, with initial scoping of research and knowledge exchange projects due to begin in the coming weeks.

The partnership also paves the way for collaboration with students from the University’s Ethical Hacking and Cybersecurity programmes, tapping into a rich pipeline of talent. Among these is Oliver McCabe, a recent graduate who completed an internship with NCR Atleos last year and has since joined the company as a fulltime member.

Director of the Abertay cyberQuarter, Professor Lynne Coventry, said:

We are thrilled to welcome NCR Atleos as a partner at the Abertay cyberQuarter, adding to our established network of organisations within Scotland’s vibrant cyber community. The inclusion of such a renowned company highlights the strong reputation that the cyberQuarter has built in a relatively brief period.
I am pleased to see potential research collaborations are already under development, highlighting the dynamic environment we have created where innovation thrives and partnerships flourish. By combining resources and expertise, there is an opportunity to advance the field of cybersecurity and develop solutions that benefit both organisations and the wider community.

NCR Atleos has had a presence in Dundee since 1946, during which time the company has designed and delivered over millions of ATMs globally. While manufacturing of ATMs in Dundee concluded in 2009, NCR Atleos continues to maintain a significant research and development presence in Dundee, employing over 500 specialists in areas such as hardware and software engineering, design, marketing, and support.

Denise Leadingham, Vice President of Hardware Engineering and Dundee Site Leader, NCR Atleos said:

NCR Atleos is excited to partner with the Abertay cyberQuarter, and we are proud of our history within Dundee and working with Abertay university over many years. There is a lot of talent in Abertay that can be nurtured to promote security and services in the dynamic financial services technology industry.

The Abertay cyberQuarter opened in 2022, receiving a total of £5.7 million in funding from the UK Government and £6 million from the Scottish Government as part of the Tay Cities Deal. Since its launch, the hub has attracted over 12 partners, including prominent organisations like the NHS Scotland Cyber Centre of Excellence, the Weir Group, and ScotlandIS.

Since its launch, the facility has hosted a diverse range of conferences, industry workshops, and learning sessions, boosting collaboration among organisations to help address global cybersecurity challenges. These initiatives not only enhance the skills of students and professionals in the field but have also contributed to strengthening the cyber resilience of the local community.
