More than 300 staff at Abertay University have benefitted from receiving the Living Wage rate since the institution began paying it.
As one of the first anchor institutions in Dundee to support the Living Wage movement, Abertay has paid the rate since 2018 and officially became a Living Wage employer in 2019.
With around 600 staff currently working at the University in total, the decision to commit to the Living Wage makes a tangible difference to colleagues, including many students who undertake casual work in the café, library or as events helpers.
Director of People and Organisational Development, Eilidh Fraser, was among a group of local employers to celebrate the start of Living Wage Week 2024, which runs from 4-10 November.
She said:
As we celebrate Living Wage Week 2024, it’s great to see the ongoing impact that this commitment has had for our staff, particularly given cost of living pressures. Dundee has been a Scottish leader in championing a collaborative approach to promoting the Living Wage and we are very proud to have played a part in that.

I like working for Abertay because I get to represent the university with a smile and help to promote and serve the uni to my best ability. I really enjoy working with likeminded students which helps to build great friendships and connections. Being an event helper allows me to gain first-hand knowledge of how the university runs and what is going on around campus. It allows me to take part in events I might have not taken part in had I not been working, which broadens horizons and experiences. The finances that come along with the job are extremely important to me as it can make the difference between being able to stay afloat financially or having to dip into my savings.

I like working at Abertay because it's a friendly environment and everyone is always in good spirits and happy to help each other. I learn more about the University every time I'm working and I really like working with the public and other students. Working in the events team is great, it keeps me involved with the University outside my studies, and the people I work with are brilliant. It also gets me away from my computer screen and out of the house. The additional income helps a lot. I have a young family, and paying for things can get tricky so this income helps me with travel expenses and any additional learning materials I may need for my studies.
