Climate activist and influencer Laura Young to attend international climate change conference

A PhD student from Abertay University and the University of Dundee will serve as an official delegate at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

As the world's largest climate change conference gets underway from 11 to 22 November, Laura Young will represent both of Dundee’s universities, engaging in the conference and participating in sessions centred on climate action and sustainability.

COP29 will bring together leaders and policymakers from around the globe to tackle the urgent challenges associated with climate change.

The event links closely with Laura’s activism and her studies - a joint PhD dedicated to enhancing Scotland's resilience to climate change through innovative nature-based solutions and robust community engagement.

She said:

I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to attend this year's COP29 conference. Climate change is not just an important issue—it is the most urgent challenge of our time. It is essential for lawmakers, scientists, and communities around the world to come together and collaborate on effective solutions to protect our planet. I’m eager to engage in meaningful discussions with global leaders and fellow activists, sharing perspectives and strategies that can drive real change. I plan to bring back valuable insights and learnings from the conference to share with students and staff at Abertay, fostering dialogue and inspiring action within our community and beyond.

In addition to her academic studies, Laura is an award-winning climate activist and ethical influencer, known for her advocacy in climate and environmental justice across social media platforms, where she has attracted a substantial following.

Notably, Laura led a groundbreaking campaign to ban single-use disposable vapes throughout Scotland and the UK. Her tireless efforts have successfully led to policy change and legislative action in both the UK and Scottish Parliaments.

Her commitment to environmental advocacy has earned her numerous accolades, including the Scottish Influencer of the Year award for 2024 and the Circular Champion award at the 2023 Holyrood Climate Awards.

Laura’s academic supervisor, Dr Rebecca Wade, Senior Lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Abertay University said:

I’m delighted that Laura will be attending COP29 and proudly representing Scotland. I can’t think of anyone better suited to represent us at such an important event. As we find ourselves at a crossroads in the battle against climate change, it’s important that we inspire more individuals to get involved in this urgent fight. I can't wait to hear about Laura’s experiences at the conference, and I’m confident she will return with a wealth of innovative ideas on how we can enhance sustainability and actively contribute to climate action right here at home.

Abertay has held the status of an official United Nations observer institution since 2021, reaffirming its commitment to addressing the climate emergency.

The University has set up a COP29 Hub on campus where staff and students can watch live streams of the conference discussions each day. The institution has secured a virtual pass, granting the Abertay community access to plenaries and open sessions, ensuring that everyone can engage with the vital conversations happening at COP29.
