Two Abertay University students have secured part-time roles with leading digital agency MTC Media, thanks to connections made at a growing local tech event hosted at the Abertay cyberQuarter.

Jack Jefferson and Nithika Senaweera, both third-year BSc (Hons) Computing students, landed roles as junior developers following their involvement in the monthly DundeeScript Meet-up – a community tech event sponsored by STV Player and MTC.

Nithika is now working as a Junior Frontend Developer working with Vue.js and JavaScript, while Jack is a Junior Web Developer, focusing on PHP and Laravel – all alongside continuing their studies at Abertay.

Jack said:

MTC has strong ties to Abertay and the local tech community – my manager alongside many others at the company are Abertay graduates, which makes the connection feel meaningful. DundeeScript has been a brilliant platform for students to really shine. It’s given us the chance to learn from others in the industry, build our confidence, and make real connections that can lead to job opportunities.

The DundeeScript event provides a welcoming space for students, early-career developers and professionals to share knowledge, make connections and explore opportunities within Dundee’s thriving tech scene.

The meet-up was co-founded in 2023 by Cheryl Torano, Abertay cyberQuarter’s Business Development Manager, and William Cameron, Engineering Manager for Web at STV Player. The pair are both Abertay graduates, having completed degrees in Ethical Hacking and Computing and Networking respectively.

Cheryl said:

We set out to create something accessible, informal and genuinely useful – a place where students could meet local employers and gain insight into the industry. To see students like Jack and Nithika go from attending the meet-up to landing real roles is exactly the kind of outcome we hoped for.

Another Abertay student, Dominik Subocz, plays a key role in organising the event, supporting everything from sourcing speakers and promoting sessions to hosting on the night.

Dominik is also part of the MTC team, working as a Frontend Developer. While organising the DundeeScript meet-up, he spread the word among his colleagues at MTC, ultimately helping to secure them as a key sponsor. Each meet-up includes guest talks, networking opportunities, and free food and drinks, made possible by continued sponsorship from MTC and STV Player.

The DundeeScript Meet-up runs on the second Tuesday of every month, continuing its mission to connect and support Dundee’s developer community. The meet-up welcomes attendees of all experience levels, from students and hobbyists to seasoned professionals.
